Bernard Hopkins got his revenge against Roy Jones Jr with a unanimous points decision in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Jones defeated Hopkins to win the IBF middleweight title way back in 1993 but there was no repeat of that outcome in 2010 as ‘The Executioner’ took the glory.
Humberto Soto outpointed David Diaz in Texas on Saturday night to win the vacant WBC lightweight title. The 29-year-old Mexican (51-7-2) successfully stepped up from super-featherweight to claim the title via a unanimous decision on the Pacquiao/Clottey undercard at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
Just 17 months ago in the same arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Floyd Mayweather Jnr knocked out Ricky Hatton inside 10 rounds. Last weekend Manny Pacquiao was hoping to emulate that victory and have the same success for himself. However, this time it took Pacquiao less than two rounds and a mere five minutes 59 seconds to KO Hatton.
Vic Darchinyan successfully defended his WBA and WBC super-flyweight world titles with a convincing points win over Rodrigo Guerrero. The Armenian-born Australian dominated from start to finish and was handed a unanimous decision by scores of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 at the end of 12 rounds.
Unbeaten American Devon Alexander stopped Juan Urango in the eighth round to unify the WBC and IBF light-welterweight titles in Connecticut. WBC champion Alexander moved his perfect record on to 20-0 with his 13th knockout victory after a right uppercut halfway through the eighth round was enough to stop the Colombian for the first time in his career.
Scott Lawton fell short in his bid to win the European super-featherweight title as he was stopped inside three rounds by Leva Kirakosyan. Lawton – whose record features defeats against Amir Khan and John Murray – had landed the title shot unexpectedly and was out of his depth against France-based Armenian Kirakosyan at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke.
Brian Magee defeated Dane Mads Larsen with a seventh-round stoppage on Saturday in Aarhus, Denmark. The victory secured him the vacant European super-middleweight title after Magee hurt Larsen in the fourth with a body shot and then gradually picked up the pace.
