Miguel Cotto became a world champion in a third different weight division as he stopped a hobbled WBA light-middleweight champion Yuri Foreman in the ninth round of their fight at Yankee Stadium.
It’s over. Katsidis catches him with a clean left-hook and Mitchell is dazed and stranded on the ropes. The referee steps in – that’s it. The crowd don’t like it but the warrior has retained his title. He bullied the challenger who couldn’t cope with his physical strength in that pulsating third round.
Round Nine: Ruiz is still there and trying to close Haye down. Three clean jabs from the champion all land. Ruiz is now marked around the face, he’s taking an incredible amount of punishment but still trundles on. Haye again flicks out the left jab. The champion is content to work behind the jab, Ruiz can’t get close. It’s over. David Haye is still the heavyweight champion of the world. A left-right combination sends Ruiz to the ropes and his corner and the referee have seen enough. For only the second time in his career the remarkable challenger hasn’t gone the distance. Haye was brilliant – from first bell to last. He looks increasingly to be the real deal.
