Ronald Winky Wright v Felix Trinidad
Former world light-middleweight champion Wright controlled the contest throughout behind his superb southpaw jab and a rock-solid defence.
Scores of 120-107 and 119-108 twice were returned as Winky earned the right to face undisputed middleweight kingpin Bernard Hopkins.
The 33-year-old, a former conqueror of British trio Ensley Bingham, Steve Foster and Adrian Dodson back in 1996 and 1997, rose to prominence with two wins over Shane Moseley last year.
And he improved his stock even further by outclassing Trinidad, a former world champion at welterweight, light-middle and middle whose only previous defeat in 43 fights was a 12th-round loss to Hopkins in 2001.
“I think he underestimated me a little bit,” said Wright.
“He thought I would be weak after moving up in weight, but you could see I was a lot stronger and he couldn’t hurt me.
“I could see his shots coming and then just picked him off. God was with me and I executed very well.
“I knew he doesn’t use a lot of movement so I just came forward with a lot a head movement, a good jab and tried to control the fight.”
Wright said he would be happy to fulfil a rematch clause in his contract with Trinidad and added: “Next time I’m going to get paid a lot more – I’m a pay-per-view fighter now!”
Promoter Don King acknowledged Wright’s dominance, saying: “He was excellent, he gave a boxing lesson that was the ultimate.
“He put pride and passion together with skill and talent and it was a blend that was undeniably unbeatable.
“The big guys have been dodging him for a long time but now he’s come of age, this was the moment of truth and he rose to the occasion.”
