Juan Manuel Marquez v Joel Casamayor

Juan Manuel Marquez scored a TKO victory over Joel Casamayor in their lightweight world championship bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

After 10 rounds of little action and the crowd becoming increasingly frustrated, Marquez unleashed a flurry of punches which saw Casamayor floored twiced in the 11th.

The first time came after Marquez caught him flush with a right but Casamayor was able to beat the count and return to his feet.

But Marquez scented blood and went in to finish the contest with a lethal barrage of punches that ended with another superb right to the chin of his opponent.

Referee Tony Weeks had no option but to step in and stop the fight immediately.

“I figured this would be a tough fight to the end but I was the more intelligent fighter,” Marquez said.

“We were prepared and we did what we had to do to win,” he added. “I wanted to fight for all my Mexican people and I did it.”
