David Haye Pulls Himself Off The Canvas

David Haye v Jean Mormeck

David Haye v Jean Mormeck

David Haye knocked down Jean-Marc Mormeck to take the Frenchman’s WBC and WBA world cruiserweight titles in Paris.

Londoner Haye was on the canvas himself in the fourth round but forced a stoppage in the seventh with a crushing right hand which had Mormeck down, rising to the count but failing to convince the referee he was fit to continue.

Twenty-seven-year-old Haye seemed sure to be in for a long haul against the determined and classy champion – until he found a fierce blow to end a fight which had been billed and was turning into a titanic battle.

Haye landed the best shots of a cagey first round, and the second followed a similar pattern – with the Frenchman starting to come into the contest a little more.

The Bermondsey fighter began to put together some right hooks to the body in the third, but Mormeck rolled with the punches.

A punishing left-right combination suddenly rocked Haye midway through the fourth – but after a standing count of eight, he regained his composure and was able to trade punches again.

By the sixth, Haye’s swagger was returning – and Mormeck appeared to be taking a breather.

A round later, though, Haye landed his killer punch – a hammer right to the head – which had the champion on the floor and down and out.
